Survivors of the Titanic
(stage show)

In 1912, many survivors from the Titanic disaster, were brought to Plymouth. This drama, written directly from historical sources, will be performed in Torbay (and possibly Plymouth).

In answer to a commonly asked question, this has nothing to do with the Titanic film starring Leo Dicaprio!

Auditions Sunday Feb 8th 2015

Several people are asking me if rehearsal times and venue have changed, they have not changed from wednesday evenings and Sunday afternoons nor are they expected to do so.

_____________________________________________

An award-winning, not-for-profit theatre company based in Brixham, South Devon, UK We specialise in shows themed on historical events, classics, and legends. We tend to be a more non-musical group, but we do sometimes get into musical-related things as well. We rehearse at Chestnut Community Centre on Wednesday evenings and Sunday afternoons.

As with the majority of our main shows we perform at the Palace Theatre in Paignton, and are looking at expanding to Brixham theatre and maybe one or two others in the coming year.
We don’t charge annual membership but instead each contribute £1 per rehearsal, which covers rehearsal hall rent.
You are considered a member as soon as you are cast in a show or working on the backstage crew for one, and once you have proven reliable as a member (good attendance, nice friendly conduct with others, etc), we add you to our careers development facebook group which is a group where we share local and national casting calls for film, theatre, modelling and related, and any local (Devon) training courses, which is a free perk to our members who want to develop a career related to the performing arts.
This summer and autumn quite a few things have come out of that, such as filming for Channel 5, being visited by the Britain’s Got Talent scouts, performing in an international opera, etc. In the past we have also worked with the BBC, Disney, Smithsonian, ITV, and Sky TV. All costumes and scripts are provided each show, we are a range of people from those new to acting, through to semi-professional, and trained performers, everyone works together to produce a good show, and a pleasant supportive team. We strongly discourage “cliques” and forbid bullying and elitism, so that it is a friendly, respectful, safe, and energetic environment for everyone.

The Ballad of Resurrection Bob – Brixham theatre show

Press release

The Ballad of Resurrection Bob  – Local history theatre show in Torbay

Brixham, Devon, UK

April 27th 2013

About the show:

In past centuries, smuggling of silks, tobacco and brandy, was rife along the coasts of the Southwest, and the smugglers invented ever more creative, and in some cases very humourous tactics to evade the law.

In the case of “Resurrection” Bob Elliott, he faked his own death in order to transport contraband to Totnes, under the noses of the coastguards, in a very large coffin. Later that night, the story tells, the local coastguards encountered Bob on the highway, and were convinced that they had seen a ghost.

From this escapade, Bob earned his nickname of “Resurrection Bob”.

The Smugglers Hotel, in Brixham town centre, is said to have been where Bob lived, at the time of the escapade, and indeed, that is how the hotel earned its name.

About the group

In the summer of 2012 The South Devon Players were filmed for a BBC 2 programme, performing a clip of their upcoming 2013 production The Ballad Of Resurrection Bob, the humourous true story of a 19th century smuggler, in the Devon fishing port of  Brixham, where the theatre company is based.

This award-winning non-profit community theatre company primarily specialises in bringing to life the history and legends of the county of Devon, in newly researched and written shows. We mainly specialise in shows about local history, but sometimes expand to wider historical events as well. We are family friendly, lively and welcoming to all who wish to be involved in theatre at any level. In the past, members have gone on to perform in major feature films, and train at RADA. Our membership ranges from age 10 to 65, and from professional performers to complete beginners, all of whom work as part of a team to create new exciting shows which are then brought to our local community.
